Uxmal

O nosso passeio deveria ter sido Uxmal de noite, mas por causa das tempestades, um raio queimou o sistema de iluminação do local então nós avisaram que teríamos que pegar um tour no dia seguinte as 9 da manhã. Chegamos no restaurante do hotel pra tomar desayuno e era à la carte. Eu fiquei sem ter muita opção porque pedi fruta e veio manga e mamão. Se eu comesse isso, era stomachache o dia todo. Ficamos esperando pelo guia às 9 da manhã com mais um monte de gente no saguão. Como Mérida é o local central dos pontos turísticos, já imaginávamos que teria um montão de turistas por ali e que os tours a partir de agora seriam lotados. 9:15 e nada do guia. O restante do povo estava partindo para o aeroporto então só sobramos nós. A mãe tentou falar com a agência mas quando conseguiu eles já estavam ali esperando pela gente. Eu já tinha até conhecido o banheiro do hotel. Entramos na van e só sobravam um lugar na frente (que o pai usou) e os últimos lugares do fundo. Tinha um casal argentino e uma família italiana. O guia falava rapidamente e repetia tudo em inglês depois. Dormimos até chegar no local. A mãe não quis nem saber e empurrou a menininha pra poder sentar perto do ar condicionado. 

Our tour was supposed to be Uxmal in the evening, but because of recent storms, a lightning stroke the electric system so they told us that we would have the tour during the day by picking us up at 9am. We went to the hotel restaurant to have breakfast and it was a la carte. I was without too many options because i asked for fruit and they gave me mango and papaya. If I had eaten those I would have had stomachache all day. We were waiting for the guide at 9am with lots of people also at the lobby. As Merida is the central point to touristic sights we imagined that there would be lot of tourists there and that tours themselves would be crowded. 9:15 and nothing no signs of the guide. The rest of the people was gone straight to the airport. We were the only ones left there and waiting. Mom tried to contact the agency but when she finally managed to do it  the people from the tour was already there waiting on us. I had already visited the restroom of the hotel. We were in the van and the only left spots were the one at the front (dad got it) and the ones at the far back. There was an Argentinian couple and an Italian family. The guide spoke fast and he repeated everything in English afterwards. We slept till we get to the place. Mom did not care and she pushed the little girl aside to she could seat near the A/C. 

Solzão de 40ºC e quase não havia sombra. Pai aproveitou para checar algumas coisinhas aí na loja. Tudo estava super arrumado e o parque tinha uma entrada toda certinha para que as pessoas passassem. 

There was a bright sun and temperature of 40ºC and almost no shade. Dad decided to check on some things he found in the little shop. Everything was so neat and the park had a proper entrance so people can only pass through there.

Mãe curtiu tirar foto na entrada. Pelo que tinha visto antes, Uxmal era uma cidade maia que tem um templo em particular muito famoso. Só. Então estavamos esperando a visita que, com certeza seria rápida. O guia falou que iriam compensar o show que cancelaram por uma visita em Kabbah logo depois de Uxmal.

Mom enjoyed taking pics at the entrance. According to what I read before, Uxmal was a mayan city with a peculiar and very famous temple. Just that. We were waiting that the visit would be for sure short. The guide told us that he would compensate the called off show with a visit to Kabbah after Uxmal. 

Ficamos esperando o guia comprar as entradas pra família italiana. Tinha um pouco de fila. Eles decidiram de última hora aproveitar o tour. Só o calor insuportável que incomodava. Ir no banheiro era um martírio com tanta umidade. Tudo limpo e organizado mas o suor saía de todos os poros possíveis. O papel higiênico derretia nas nossas mãos de tanto calor. Que situação. 

We were waiting for the guide to by the tickets to the Italian family. There was a bit of a line. They decided to take the tour at the last minute. Only the intense heat bothered us. Going to the restroom was awful with all the humidity. Everything was clean and organized but the sweat was released through all pores possible. The toilet paper melted at our hands with the heat. What an awful situation.

A mãe quis trocar de chapéu comigo. E assim que entramos e vimos uma cisterna estava logo ali a pirâmide do adivinho. A lenda diz que a pirâmide foi construída em apenas 1 noite. 

Mom wanted to exchange her hat with me. As soon as we got in we saw a cistern and there was the pyramid of the magician. According to the legend the pyramid was built in one single night. 

Pausa para foto. Todo mundo com calor mas pose sempre. 

Pause for the photo. Everybody was suffering with the heat but always with a pose. 

O guia resolveu dar a volta na pirâmide que pra mim já estava bonita como estava. E como disse antes, pra mim era só isso. 

The guide decided to go around the pyramid that to me was already pretty at it is. And I said before, it was just that.

Demos a volta e vimos que a pirâmide tinha mais detalhes e, inclusive uma escadaria maior que levava até o centro. O guia falou das 3 construções que podem ser vistas nesse ângulo, superpostas uma sobre as outras que indica que não pode ter sido construída toda em 1 noite. Eles tinham o costume de construir sobre as ruínas antigas pra demonstrar o poderio de sua civilização. 

We walked around it and we saw that the pyramid had more details, and even a bigger staircase leading to the center of the pyramid. The guide spoke of 3 constructions that can be seen at that angle, superposed each other indicating that they couldn't be built on one single night. They had the habit of building over ancient ruins to demonstrate the power of their civilization.

Continuamos andando ao redor da pirâmide e percebemos que tinha um pequeno corredor à direita. Seguimos por lá. 

We kept walking around the pyramid and we noticed that there was a small corridor on the right. We followed through there. 

Aqui é uma foto da entrada central. Diz a lenda que na verdade a entrada é a cara de um monstro. Dá para notar a boca como a entrada, logo acima tem dois olhos e um nariz tipo transformers no meio. Talvez seja um transformer então faz sentido que tenha sido construída em 1 noite. Acabou a bateria dele e ele dormiu. 

This is a picture of the main entrance. According to the legend the entrance is actually the face of a monster. You can notice the mouth as the entrance, right above the eyes and the nose as of those from transformers in the middle. Maybe it was a transformer after all which would make perfect sense that it was built in 1 night. Maybe its battery ran out and he slept. 

O pai curtiu tirar bastante fotos então a mãe aproveitou para usar bem a câmera dela. Com pausa para não sair tremida.

Dad enjoyed to take pictures so mom decided to make good use of her camera. Pausing so it wont be trembling.

Eu falei pra mãe tirar fotos minhas com emoção, ou seja, em movimento, mas ela já exagerou na dose. Tinha desenhos no quadro dos maias com essa pose. Segundo os historiadores, isso significa que estavam dançando. Isso nos dias de hoje significa: foto paparazzi. 

I told mom to take pics of me with emotion, that is, in movement, but I think she exaggerated in the doses. There were some Mayan drawings with people with that pose. according to Historians, that means that they were dancing. But this, these days, means: paparazzi's picture.

O lugar era imenso. Assim que entramos pelo corredor lateral à pirâmide, nos deparamos com o complexo das monjas. Segundo o guia, foi chamado assim porque os descobridores acharam que seria um local muito bom para conventos. Historicamente deve ter sido um prédio administrativo em que pessoas passavam por lá e faziam negócio. Dá para perceber pelo menos 4 tipos de construções diferentes o que significa que os prédios foram sendo adicionados de acordo com a tribo que vivia neles. 

The place was huge. As soon as we got into the side corridor of the pyramid we faced the nuns complex. According to the guide, it was called as thus because people who discovered it thought that it would be a nice place as a convent. Historically, this must have been a management building in which people would go to trade. You can notice at least 4 types of different buildings which means that the buildings were added according to the tribes that lived in.

Eu quis visitar a escadaria de um dos prédios para ver melhor os detalhes. Havia várias esculturas, a famosa da serpente e um monte do deus da chuva que eu curti. Era um elefantinho. O que me estranha é que não havia elefantes naquela região então como é possível que eles saibam como um elefante é. 

I wanted to see the staircase of one of the buildings to see the details. There were sculptures, the famous one of the serpent and lots of the rain god that I liked. It was like a little elephant. What surprises me is that there were no elephants in that region so how it is possible that they knew what it was.

Vista de cima do complexo e a pirâmide ao fundo. O calor, novamente estava insuportável. Eu tentei ficar olhado os hieroglíficos mas não dava pra ver quase nada. O pai subiu as escadarias de quase todos os prédios, que não são poucas.

This is a panoramic view of the complex and the pyramid on the back. The heat, was again unbearable. I tried to keep looking at the hieroglyphics but I could not see much. Dad went up the stairs of all the buildings and there were not few steps.  

Hermanito não perdeu tempo e subiu na única que tinha sombra. Aí ele foi sentar para apreciar a vista. Tinha um monte de pássaros dentro dos prédios. Eu tentei sentar e quase me atacaram então saí rapidamente.

Hermanito didnt lose any time and went to sit down on the only shade possible. Then he sat down to appreciate the view. There were lots of birds inside the buildings. I tried to sit down but they almost attacked me so I left quickly.

Pensando que já tinha acabado tudo, o guia vira pra gente e mostra marcas de mãos maias pintadas pelas paredes. Acham que é a assinatura do artista. Não duvido que seja criança arteira fazendo pirraça. As crianças que estavam com a gente já estavam começando a nos irritar. Seguimos andando por aí e visitamos o jogo de bola. Um dos locais que eles tiveram. Não era muito grande, disse o guia. O círculo valia extra pontos, mas há outros que digam que se ganhava por conseguir colocar a bola ali dentro. Essa é réplica só pra mostrar como deveria ser.

thinking that everything was done, the guide tells us that there were marks of mayan hands on the walls. They think it is the signature of the artist. I dont doubt that a child did that just for fun. The kids that were with us were starting to annoy us. We kept walking and we visited the ball game place. One of the local ones that they had. It was not very big, according to the guide. The circle was worth extra points but some people say that the one that scored would win. This is a replicate just to show how the ring must have been. 

E quando você pensa que viu tudo, tinha mais um monte de coisas. Pulamos um prédio que tinha ali e que não sei porque não tiramos fotos. Acho que já estávamos cansados e com calor, fora as crianças que atormentavam. Então o guia disse: agora é livre, se vocês seguirem adiante vão ver as escadarias de uma das mais altas pirâmides maias, se não é a maior. Vocês podem optar por voltar para o carro ou subir as escadas e admirar todas as outras construções que ainda estão escondidas na floresta. O lugar era imenso. As crianças estavam chatas e queriam ir pro carro. Aí falei pro pai: pai, letsugo. E começamos a subir as escadas. Tudo por um pouco de tranquilidade. Mas não adiantou muito porque eles resolveram nos seguir no fim.

And when you think that you thought everything, there was a bunch of other things. We skipped a building that was there and I dont know why it is that we did not take any pics. I think we were tired and suffering from the heat, and also the annoying kids to put up with. So the guide says: "now you are free, if you keep going ahead you will see the staircase of one of the highest pyramids if not the tallest ones from the mayans. You can choose to go back to the car or go up the stairs and admire other constructions that are still hidden in the forest". The place was huge. The annoying kids wanted to go to the car. So I told dad: dad, let's go. And we went up the stairs. Everything for a bit of peace. But it didnt help much because the kids decided to follow us in the end. 

Pai curte, então ele subiu mesmo. Mario e eu fomos mais rápido porque o pai se distraiu com as iguanas e os outros lugares embaixo da pirâmide.

Dad likes it to he really went up. Mario and I went faster because dad got distracted with the iguanas and other places below the pyramids. 

Essa é a vista de cima. Quando se está no alto não dá para ver por onde se desce. Parece que estamos à beira de um abismo. 

This is the view we have from upstairs. When you are up there you cant really see how to go down. It looks like if we were at a cliff.

Essa foto foi na saída. Os pais resolveram descer rápido enquanto que o hermanito e eu saímos perseguindo as iguanas. Mas chegou uma hora que já havia muitas e tava começando a assustar. De repente a gente escuta: Giseeellllaaaa. Putz, com eco. 

This pic was taken at the exit. Mom and dad decided to go down quicker while hermanito and I were following the iguanas. But there was a point that there were too many and it got scary. All of a sudden we hear: Giseeellllaaaa. Even with echo. 

Mais um fotinho pra relembrar o local. É legal imaginar que tem toda uma cidade embaixo de tanta floresta, mas por outro lado, é triste ter que derrubar tanta árvore só para ver as construções. Eu creio que eles devem estar nesse dilema também. 

One more pic to remember the place. It is nice to imagine that there is a whole city under the forest but, on the other hand, it is sad to put down all trees so we can see all the buildings. I believe they must have the same dilemma. 

Íamos para Kabbah mas quando chegamos na saída (mãe já amiguinha dos argentinos) o guia perguntou se não podíamos almoçar primeiro porque as crianças estavam com fome. Minha vontade era de falar azar, prefiro fazer exercício agora e depois almoçar bem e voltar pra casa dormindo. Mas como criança com fome fica mais chata ainda, então preferimos almoçar agora. Todo mundo de cara fechada, por sinal. E ainda nós fizeram sentar todos juntos. A mãe só batendo papo com os argentinos. Mas esses eram gente boa mesmo. 

We were going to Kabbah but when we got to the exit (mom was already friendly to the Argentinean) the guide asked if we could have lunch first because the kids were hungry. I wanted to say no way I'd rather do exercise now and eat well later and go back home sleeping. But as hungry children are even worse we preferred to have lunch then. Everybody was upset by the way. And they made us sit together. Mom was only talking to the Argentinean. But these ones were nice people.
